Over its four-year lifecycle, the project provided technical and financial backing to more than 60 local organizations across Kenya, focusing on capacity building, civic education, and constructive engagement between citizens and public duty bearers.

Organizers highlighted that the initiative operated primarily across three strategic pillars covering democratic governance, social inclusion, and corporate accountability.

Under the democracy and rule of law thematic area, the project facilitated community dialogues, public forums, and film screenings designed to enhance civic awareness. These efforts aimed to enable citizens to better understand local administrative processes, articulate their rights, and hold public duty bearers accountable.

Addressing gender equality and non-discrimination, grassroots interventions focused on combating gender-based violence and mitigating social barriers facing vulnerable groups. Local partners established community-led support networks and dialogue platforms to challenge harmful traditional practices and foster inclusive governance.

In the sphere of business and human rights, the project supported community-led advocacy examining the environmental and socioeconomic impacts of commercial endeavors, including extractive industries. Initiatives such as the #OneMillionTrees4Kilifi campaign demonstrated how sustained public engagement and local screenings can help residents demand environmental responsibility and protect livelihoods affected by mining operations.

During a reflection panel at the conference, representatives from grantee organizations shared case studies illustrating how localized leadership and targeted capacity-building efforts enabled communities to address rights issues independently.

Consortium partners emphasized that while the formal project phase has concluded, the networks, local leadership capacities, and civic mechanisms established over the past four years will serve as a durable foundation for ongoing efforts to safeguard civic space and support sustainable development in Kenya.

Stakeholders, development partners, and civil society representatives gathered in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi on Thursday to mark the conclusion of the “Haki Ni Yetu” (Our Rights) project, a four-year initiative aimed at promoting human rights, democratic governance, and the rule of law across the East African nation.
