As Kenya Marks Mashujaa Day, Tourism and Wildlife CS Hon. Rebecca Miano EGH Pays Glowing Tribute to Game Rangers, Wardens and Fallen Heroes Who Endangered Their Lives for Our Heritage
As Kenya beats the drums of Mashujaa Day, one leader has chosen to turn the spotlight away from herself and onto the brave hearts in the dust, in the bush, in the forests and in the savannah — the men and women who endanger their lives every single day to protect Kenya’s priceless heritage.
That leader is none other than Hon. CS Rebecca Miano, EGH — A Mother. A Queen. A Trailblazer.
In a deeply moving Mashujaa Day message, the Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Hon. Rebecca Miano EGH, has celebrated the ultimate heroes of our time: the game rangers, the wardens, the scouts, and the community conservancy warriors who stand between our wildlife and extinction, many paying the ultimate price, killed by wild animals and poachers in the line of duty.
“Mashujaa Day is not just about history. It is about those who wake up every morning and risk everything to guard our heritage. Our rangers are our shield. They endanger their lives so that our lion can roar, our elephant can roam, and our children can inherit a Kenya that is still wild and beautiful,” CS Miano said.
A Mother’s Heart for Heroes
To understand why CS Miano’s message hits differently, you must understand the woman herself.
Hon. Rebecca Miano EGH is not just a Cabinet Secretary. She is a Mother of the Nation. A Queen of quiet power. A lawyer by training, a corporate titan by record, and a servant leader by calling.
Born in Ndaragwa, Nyandarua County, this daughter of the countryside rose from humble beginnings to become the first-ever female Managing Director and CEO of KenGen, East Africa’s largest electricity producer — a company she led for five years with distinction, steering it to global recognition in renewable energy and structuring multi-billion shilling deals.
A holder of a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Nairobi, a Diploma from Kenya School of Law, a Master of Laws from Australian National University, a Certified Public Secretary of Kenya (FCS), an Advocate of the High Court, and a recipient of three Presidential honours — the Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW), Moran of the Order of the Burning Spear (MBS) and now the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH), Kenya’s highest civilian honour — Miano is excellence personified.
She founded the Pink Energy Forum to champion women in energy, served on the World Bank Group Advisory Council on Gender and Development, and has been named among Top 100 Women CEOs in Africa and Top 25 Movers and Shakers in Africa. In October 2026, KenyaTrack ranked her the 2nd Best Performing Cabinet Secretary in Kenya with 84% — a testament to her motherly calmness, corporate discipline, and results-driven leadership that has made tourism roar back.
But beyond all the titles, Kenyans know her as a mother — soft-spoken, deeply spiritual, humble, yet fearless.
Celebrating Those Who Are Killed Protecting What Is Ours
CS Miano said this Mashujaa Day must remember those whose names never make the front pages.
The ranger in Tsavo who was trampled while tracking poachers.
The warden in Amboseli who stood unarmed before a charging buffalo to protect tourists.
The young scout in Laikipia who was attacked by a lion while on patrol.
The KWS officer in Mt. Kenya who succumbed to a snake bite deep in the forest.
“They are killed by wild animals in the line of duty, yet they never retreat. They are injured, they lose limbs, they lose colleagues, but they return to the bush the next morning. What greater love for a nation can there be than to die protecting its heritage?” the CS posed.
Under CS Miano’s leadership at the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, the welfare of rangers has been elevated. She has pushed for better risk allowances, insurance covers for rangers killed or injured in action, modern equipment, training, and housing for frontline officers. She has also championed conservation as a national pride, linking tourism earnings directly to community benefits and aggressive international marketing that has seen arrivals grow steadily.
A Queen Who Leads With Grace and Steel
Those who have worked with Hon. Miano describe her as a Queen in the truest sense — graceful, composed, prayerful, but with a steel backbone of integrity. She does not shout to lead. She delivers.
“She comes in ahead of big names like Opiyo Wandayi, Kabogo, Soipan Tuya, Aden Duale, Murkomen and Joho in performance rankings not by politicking, but by quietly working. That is the mark of a Queen — results speak,” said a senior tourism stakeholder.
Her message this Mashujaa Day was simple yet powerful: Kenya’s heritage is not just animals. It is the soul of the nation. And those who protect it are not just employees — they are Mashujaas.
“To every game ranger, every warden, every community scout, every KWS officer who endangers his life in the Aberdares, in the Mara, in the coral reefs of the Coast — we see you. To the families of those who were killed by wildlife while serving Kenya — your loved ones are heroes. Their blood waters our national heritage. Kenya will never forget them,” Miano said.
She called on Kenyans to honour them not just with words, but by protecting wildlife, supporting conservancies, visiting parks, and saying a prayer for the ranger on night patrol tonight.
As drums roll and flags fly this Mashujaa Day, Hon. CS Rebecca Miano EGH stands tall — A Mother who cares for her own. A Queen who honours the brave. A Leader who knows that the true glory of Kenya lies not just in what we have inherited, but in those who are willing to die to protect it.
Happy Mashujaa Day to our Rangers. Happy Mashujaa Day to our Wardens.
And Happy Mashujaa Day to our Mother, our Queen — Hon. CS Rebecca Miano EGH.
